I’ve seen people post like this before with the tone of encouraging others to learn and showing that film can sometimes be difficult even when most of the time you feel you have the hang of it. In exploring this hobby I have always tried to be clear that I embrace being an amateur and that I don’t feel you need to be technically proficient at it in order to have fun and find fulfillment.</p><p>That being said, I have faced quite a lot of heartbreak over rolls like this. I literally cried when these photos came back. This roll was shot a few years ago on a trip to Halifax after my Canon AE-1 truly bit the dust and I had first bought my Nikon FG-20. This was actually the first roll I shot with my current camera. I freaked out and felt hopeless like I might never be able to use this camera properly. Buying and processing film is expensive enough as is, and on my very limited budget the new camera was a massive purchase for me. It felt so awful to not have any photos from that trip turn out and to not know what I had been doing wrong.</p><p>The answer was that in the switch from Canon to Nikon, I was using the Nikon like I had used my Canon. The way the light meters function on the cameras I had learned on functioned differently from the one on my current camera, leaving every photo on the roll underexposed. It was sad that the photos from my trip turned out this way, I was so upset I couldn’t even look at them for a while. But I was able to learn from this and I still had so much fun taking them. </p><p>There are a few reasons that I started really getting into film but the main reason is that it drives me to make memories all on my own. I started experimenting with shooting photos during a time in my life when I was very isolated, and realized that I was relying too much on the company of others in order to go out and have fun. Now, when I have my camera on me, I feel more comfortable being alone.
